Swedish Meatballs

We recently had a challenge on the farm.

Swedish meatballs. Versus. Hawaiian meatballs.

I grew up eating Hawaiian meatballls as a regular occurrence in our household. It’s still one of my favorites! It’s probably the PINEAPPLE!

You know when people ask you “What’s the ONE food you couldn’t live without?” Like, if you HAD to eat one food for the rest of your life, what would it be?

For me, my answer would be PINEAPPLE!

Scott, on the other hand, does not like pineapple and truly doesn’t like sweet foods, so Hawaiian meatballs ranks low on his list. So he asked if we could have both Swedish and Hawaiian meatballs for supper.

Let’s just say, the final tally was 3 to 2 in favour of the Swedish meatballs!

So here’s my Swedish meatball recipe 😃


  • 1 lb ground pork
  • 1 lb ground beef
  • 1 egg
  • 3 tbsp LF sausage & burger seasoning or seasonings of your choice
  • 1/4 cup salted butter
  • 1/3 cup all-purpose flour
  • 3 cups beef broth
  • 1 cup heavy cream or milk
  • 1 tablespoon Worcestershire sauce
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 1/2 teaspoon pepper


Preheat the oven to 350F.

In a large bowl, mix together ground pork, ground beef, egg, and seasoning. Roll into meatballs. Place on parchment paper lined cookie sheet. Place in oven and bake for 40 to 60 minutes, stirring partway through.

While the meatballs cook, prepare the sauce. In a large saucepan, melt the butter over low-medium heat. Stir in the flour and allow to bubble for 1 to 2 minutes. Slowly add the beef broth, cream/milk, Worcestershire sauce, and salt & pepper, whisking well. Increase heat to medium-high. Simmer, stirring frequently, for 10 to 15 minutes until sauce has thickened.

In a deep casserole dish, place the meatballs in the bottom and pour the sauce over top. Return to the oven and heat for 10 to 20 minutes, until heated through.

Serve with mashed potatoes or rice. Enjoy!
